I've used my m5405 laptop for about 4 or 5 years now and it has recently started shutting down. I was able to somewhat help the problem by deactivating cideamon.exe process which performs the file indexing but when ever I do anything cpu intensive it seems to overheat and shutdown. I've performed the dust cleanout process I saw from a similar post for the M53xx laptops but it is still occuring. I'm thinking of reapplying the thermal paste and I've ordered a chill pad for it. Does anyone have the instructions for applying the thermal paste for these laptops? Is the arctic silver paste the best to use for the amd sempron 2800 processor?

Hi, Arctic Silver 5 is good. You just want to put a very thin strip in the middle about 3/4" ( doesn't take a lot). Just once the processor is in, just twist the heat sink on top of it first one way then the other to spread it. Incidently you want to use guaze pads and rubbing ( Isopropyl) alcohol to remove all the old stuff first.

Wow what a difference the arctic silver 5 made!! I had never noticed that the cpu fan would stay on continually but after I put the new grease in the first time I booted it up I noticed the fan didn't kick on. Then when I checked the core temp after boot up it was a nice cool 59 degrees Celsius and stayed there until I started thrashing it with videos and cpu intensive apps like napster and it never shutdown at all! It's been a few weeks since I did applied it and everything is running great. I also noticed that the laptop is a little quicker, probably because the o/s was stepping the cpu performance down when it was starting to overheat. I also have a new chill pad that I had bought before I changed the grease out, I probably could have done without it but I installed it anyway. It's the Syba SY-NBK68002 Silent Giant 7-Inch Fan Laptop / Notebook Cooling Pad if anyone's interested. It works real nice and is very quiet, I highly recommend it.
