Here is the motherboard list for Emachines. Google and DEX search will be your friend if you want to know more. Emachines invariably load a simplified OEM bios, which offer minimal user interaction, and upgrading the bios, except for official Emachines upgrades, is full of complications. Drivers and manuals can be found at Emachines, Gateway and the manufacturers websites: http://www.dexplor.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7747291

Thanks to all the intrepid members who have rolled their sleeves up and had a look inside their eMachines. It's the only way to find out sometimes. Will add the new Socket AM2 boards when I know more.

YOU CAN REPLACE YOUR MOBO WITH NO SOFTWARE OR OS RE-INSTALL -JUST REPLACE USING THE SAME CHIPSET FAMILY

Here's the notes I made for my MOBO changeout, the board was new and $30 + $15 shipping from Ebay.

INSTALLATION NOTES:
Replaced Imperial GV 200307018 Mother Board which uses the Intel 845GV chipset in an Emachine T2542.
New Mother Board is the Intel D845GLVA (L) using the Intel 845GL chipset.
Transfer CPU and fan and RAM.
Install board into PC, except for the front panel plugs, the others were idiot proof .

The rear external jacks / cable receptacles don't line up with the old metal faceplate on the PC case and since my board was not a retail boxed board but new surplus, it didn't come with a new plate - I just removed and discarded the old plate.

Front Panel Plugs:
HDD: Red to pin1, Wht to pin 3
Pwr LED: Green to pin 2, White to pin 3
On/Off button: Black to pin 6, White to pin 8

Front Audio Plug:
Removed blue jumpers from pins near PCI slots and plug into these pins, only goes one way.

OS (XP Home) Registration:
Upon start up the OS will ask you to register your OS, use the COA # on the purple sticker located on the back of your PC to get a new License # by phone. After inputting your new activation/license # your OS is good to go.

Drivers:
Start in safe mode and update your drivers for the new board if you need to - Drivers available from the Intel website - Audio, Chipset, Graphics, LAN, IDE Accelerator, and USB 2.0 update.

NOTE: My PC wouldn't boot fully until I installed two new drivers for my Audio and Ethernet Controller / LAN in safe mode. In my case it would find new hardware and then shut down and reboot - repeating this loop.

Once the drivers were installed in safe mode the PC booted normally.

Other Notes:
Press F8 upon boot to enter safe mode.
Press F2 to enter bios with new board - used to be delete button.
PC button LED is not two color any more - no big deal.

I have an emachines ET1641-02w with MCP73VT-PM motherboard.
I am trying to connect an audio cable twisted pair, but I don't see any labeling on the mb.
where can I find a picture or can someone tell me where it may go? I was hoping to see something labeled aux or cd
thanks!

I think the generic name of that motherboard is GF7050VT-M. If so, then here is the specifications for the motherboard. Compare it with your motherboard to see if its the same. You will have to open up the PC to do so of course but since you are connecting wires, I presume this is already the case.

http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Produc ... =1&LanID=9

If so, then you can download the manual on the page.

What is the purpose of adding expansion cards to the motherboard? Why aren't expansion cards simply built-in to the computer at the time of manufacture?

Well, if by expension cards you mean video and sound cards, they are built into the board. However they aren't up to par for gaming and so that is why they have the slots to add a better card. Well not JUST gaming, as far as the PCI slot goes, there are many different types of cards that can go into PCI.

How do I connect a dsl modem and wireless router together when they are in different rooms? My modem acts as a router and it hooked up to a switch, the switch it hooked into a patch panel. I can not move the modem away from that spot because it needs to hook into the patch panel. I would like wireless access in a different room, but how do I set a wireless router to do that without running into a double nat?

Wow man. Totally wrong thread to post this question in, but I'll try and help you anyway. So, I don't know what you mean by swich and patch panel, but the only way I can think of is to run a long eithernet cord from your modem to the wireless router in the other room. Maybe you can make a picture in Paint to illistrate your situation?

What motherboard should I get that is compatible with radeon 5770 and supports ddr3? I want to upgrade the specs on my comp to increase performance and play the latest games at a decent graphics level. The radeon 5770 1 gb seems to be pretty decent and I think 2 gb ddr3 should suffice for now. What I'm clueless about is the motherboard. Some suggestions please.
